It’s been over a year now since I started gardening, but it wasn’t until the fall garden harvest I’m about to show you in this post, that I really thought to myself, “wow, gardening is SO COOL.”
Gardening in the low southwest desert means we get to enjoy a long fall and winter gardening season (that is if your garden can survive a frostnip or two). The fall garden is a busy one, yielding tomatoes, winter greens like kale and lettuce. Our zucchini plant has been cranking out squash left and right and a bursting nasturtium flower is spilling over the edge of the raised bed.
It really is a wonderful and beautiful time of year to garden.
A plentiful fall garden harvest
It’s so nice to have fresh ingredients available to us all the time. Here’s what we have growing in the fall garden right now:
- Arugula
- Armenian cucumbers
- Artichokes
- Beets
- Bistro salad mix
- Broccoli
- Buttercrunch lettuce
- Butternut squash (although it’s barely hanging on)
- Carrots
- Cauliflower
- Celery
- Chives
- Citrus
- Garlic
- Green onions
- Herbs (allllll the herbs)
- Kales (few varieties)
- Nasturtium
- Peppers
- Radishes
- Romaine lettuce
- Scallions
- Snow peas
- Swiss chard
- Tomatoes (few varieties)
- Zucchini
I’m sure I’m forgetting something, but that’s the gist of it! We are also in the middle of pecan season as well! Just about every day we spend time picking up the little tiger-striped gems that fall to the ground.
